Help me...Help me. Does anybody remember the Iceberg Cafe on East Central?

EAST CENTRAL--The Iceberg Cafe and gas station was located on East Central (Route 66). Here comes the hard part...and I need some help. At some point this wonderful roadside attraction was moved to or from Algodones. It makes more sense to move the building to Central from Algodones because Route 66 was shifted to Central Ave in 1937 from the northern route which did pass through Algodones. But I am not sure if that was the case...or was it later moved up north of Bernalillo from its Central location. Anybody know?

Johnny Mango,

I have a memory of the Iceberg Cafe being at the south end of Bernalillo on the east side of old 85.

All throughout the 60's and until 73 we visited my grandma each summer where she rented in Corrales. Some of our destinations for family trips were Coronado Monument and Battleship Rock in the Jemez - so we would have traveled old 85 on our way to old Highway 44.

So that would place the Iceberg in that location in the late sixties. I have spoken about this with friends who were around then too who remember it there so it might be true.

I bet you are wondering why I am replying to this blogpost now 4 years later - well in one of your current blogposts you said that your friend Joe who just died appeared in your first blog post. So I went looking for it and came across this. I think I won't be able to keep searching. But I do feel like I know you more now! Thanks for sharing!!

Yes, I remember it being at the south end of Bernalillo too. My grandmother lived there and we'd pass by all the time.

Yes, I too remember it on the south end of Bernalillo. I lived in Bernalillo from about 61-72 Always thought it was very cool but never thought to take a picture of it. I remember it falling into decay and eventually was torn down, maybe around 1970.

I am writing a story about the Iceberg. A couple of posts identify either owners or folks who worked there. If there is any contact info, folks I could talk to, I'd be very interested. Call Johnnie at 505-852-2995
